Exploring the South Asian ingredients, philosophy and heritage of MotherEarth's Skincare

As we enter into the new year, full of promises and resolutions to make this year better, stronger, healthier and more successful, perhaps it is the ideal time to reflect on our daily routines and how we are looking after our body.

At MotherEarth's, we pride ourselves in bringing together scientific knowledge of skincare formulation with the ancient principles of Ayurvedic healing. That's why, you will often find ingredients that are rarely used in western skincare in our little red jars.

In this blog, we spotlight some of our unique skincare ingredients, whose use in our blends is inspired by the traditions and healing powers of Ayurveda:

1. Saffron

Saffron features as the star ingredient in MotherEarth's moisturisers. Known as the most expensive spice in the world, it is frequently used in south asian and middle eastern cooking to give food a delicate flavour and aroma. Beyond the realms of food, saffron is also famous for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it an essential ingredient of Ayurvedic healing.

In the world of beauty, saffron serves as a highly sought after ingredient to heal blemishes, marks and scars, making it the ideal ingredient to incorporate into skincare regimes for acne prone skin. The spice is highly effective at inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. This makes it an incredibly effective crucial ingredient for skincare products tackling hyper-pigmentation (Source: Vedix). Furthermore, it is naturally high in Vitamin-C, giving the ingredient its skin-brightening and complexion enhancing benefits.

At MotherEarth's beauty, we infuse saffron in our moisturisers; Glow Me and Glow Me Light (for sensitive skin) to help you achieve naturally glowy and radiant skin.

2. Liquorice Root

Like saffron, liquorice root also helps inhibit tyrosinase, to prevent and treat pigmentation, sun-spots and acne marks. Liquorice root also contains liquiritin, an active compound that helps to disperse and remove existing melanin in the skin.

Hyper-pigmentation and age spots, if left untreated only grow over time. Liquorice root extract contains also Licochalcone A, a compound that slows down oil production. Because blemishes are partly caused by over productive oil glands, liquorice root extract can help nip those blemishes in the bud (Source: Urban SkinRX).

Finally, liquorice root can also help soothe irritation and calm redness, meaning it is ideal for people suffering with skin sensitivities. If you do have sensitive skin, MotherEarth's  Glow Me Light moisturiser combines the potent combination of liquorice and saffron to both sooth the skin and tackle marks and spots from historic acne breakouts.

3. Millet Seed Extract

Our final featured ingredient in this blog is millet seed extract. Millet is a core part of South Asian food as a substitute for wheat. The superfood is a rich source of protein, fibre and vitamins and minerals.

However, what is less known is the benefits of millet seed extract in skincare. It can act as a protective agent, forming a film on the skin's surface to protect it from environmental damage. Its high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids mean that it helps retain moisture in the skin, preventing it from dehydrating and becoming dull.

This, together with the its high concentration of antioxidants means that millet seed extract neutralises free radicals, working to rejuvenate the skin and prevent early signs of skin ageing.

That's why we use millet seed extract as one of the primary ingredients in MotherEarth's Cleanse Meface cleanser and polish to ensure that your daily face wash leaves your skin looking healthy, hydrated and full of vitality.

With the new year in full flow, there is no time like the present to incorporate these Ayurvedic ingredients in your 2024 skincare regime! Let us know if you are using them already in the comments section!
