Debunking Acne Myths: Skincare Tips from a Clinical Pharmacist

A huge thank you to Janki, a clinical pharmacist and skincare enthusiast for contributing this piece to the MotherEarth's Blog

ACNE.

A four-letter word which so many of us can relate to. As an acne sufferer myself, this word has been part of my life since I’ve been a teenager.

For most, acne is something that flares up during puberty and lasts for a few years but for many others, myself included, teen acne can often lead to adult acne which can be stressful, emotional, and frustrating.

My personal experience of growing up with acne and learning how to manage it over time makes it a subject close to my heart. Growing up in a South Asian household where my mum and grandma used ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Turmeric to help with my acne developed my passion for natural skincare, which I’ve gone on to strengthen through.

My scientific knowledge as a pharmacist, turning my passion into my profession. So I thought that I’d use this background and expertise I’ve built over the years, to share what I’ve learnt and bust a few common misconceptions about acne.

Number 1: ‘Acne is caused by having a poor diet’

There is no sufficient clinical evidence that a certain type of food causes acne. Our bodies are all different and we should be eating a balanced diet for our overall health and wellbeing.

Number 2: ‘Acne is caused by make up’

No. Make up does not cause acne. However, if you are not removing your make up appropriately and using products which clog your pores then dirt/oil builds up blocking your pore contributing to breakouts. Make up itself doesn’t. If you have acne prone skin, I would highly recommend using non-comedogenic products.

Number 3:'Squeezing spots is the best way to get rid of acne.

Not at all!

And the chances are you may end up having pigmented skin or acne scarring if you squeeze your spots. The best way to deal with black or white heads is using ingredients like salicylic acid (a key ingredient in MotherEarth’s CleanseME) which unclogs the pore and targets one of the causes of acne.
