Tips and tricks to get that bridal glow
Some of you may have noticed our co-founders being particularly quiet on this blog space over the last couple of months. Reason being, your favourite mother-daugher duo has been busy preparing for Prerna's wedding this summer. With the big day having come and gone, we are now ready to spill the secrets of how to get your skin ready for that natural bridal glow.
The most important bit of advice we can give to any bride to be is acknowledging that good skin is not just about skincare and what products you use but importantly a combination of diet and skincare. Good skin health is strongly connected to good gut health, so for me, getting my skin wedding ready was about making sure that I had the right food and supplements as well as the best possible skincare routine.
Second, I knew that achieving glowy skin takes time, and nothing works overnight. So my skin and food regime started 3 months before the wedding. Here is my breakdown of how to look after your skin ahead of your big day, my dos and dont's and learnings from the experience.
3 months to go:
With 3 months to go to my wedding, I wanted to make sure that I was getting all the nutrients in my body for good gut health and healthy looking skin. The three things that became a crucial part of my routine at this stage were:
Drinking Enough Water: I've always been really bad at my 2L of water intake every day. But with only 90 days to go to the big day, I knew I couldn't afford any excuses. Water keeps your skin hydrated and helps maintain the skin's elasticity. This means ensuring enough water intake can help reduce signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles and ensure that your skin has a refreshed and radiant look to it.
Taking Probitoic Supplements: Probiotics help your skin by balancing the microbiome, reducing inflammation, and strengthening the skin barrier. These beneficial bacteria also enhance hydration, boost collagen production, and protect against environmental damage, resulting in improved skin texture and reduced signs of aging - taking probitoics everyday ensured my skin, gut health and overall immunity were on point in the lead up to the big day.
Taking Chlorella tablets: Chlorella is a type of algae that grows in fresh water that is is packed with essential nutrients that contribute to healthy skin. As a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it works to support the skin’s barrier function and contributing to its softness and elasticity. In particular chlorella's high levels of antioxidants like Lutein, Beta-Carotene, and chlorophyll play a pivotal role in detoxification, promoting clearer, more radiant skin (Source: Healthybeing.com). I took Sun Chlorella tablets every day to promote a healthy gut and clear glowy skin. (This one is definitely worth continuing long term too!)
1-2 Months to Go:
Any changes in skincare routine take at least a month or two to truly take effect, so it is important to make sure that your skincare routine is finessed in the 2 months leading up to your wedding. For me, living with a skincare expert and the brains and beauty behind MotherEarth's meant that I could make the most of in-house expertise.
MotherEarth's Age Defying Routine has been my go to pre-wedding skincare ritual. Personally, I wanted a very light, dewy makeup look for the wedding, and I was keen to avoid a heavy make up base for the ceremony. This meant it was really important to tackle my dark circles and under eye puffiness ahead of the wedding. MotherEarth's Eye Revive serum that comes as part of the Age-Defying routine has been the perfect product for this, as the liquorice root extract, eye bright and green tea extract in this serum really helped reduce the appearance of dark circles. Plus, the handy roller ball applicator ensured portion control and supported lymphatic drainage to reduce any under eye puffiness. Moreover, the pollution defence Magical Mist, face mist that comes with this routine really revived my natural glow using plant peptides to renew the skin's out layer and tighten my pores. Finally, the Beauty Burst Hyaluronic Serum in this routine became my must have product to give me deeper, long term hydration as well as instantly plump and glowy skin. I also used Beauty Burst as my primer on the big day to give me that extra burst of radiance.
Food & Diet: I cannot empahsise enough the impact your diet can have on how your skin looks. In particular, beetroot has incredibly detoxifying properties and is incredibly rich in antioxidants. Beetroot is very effective at purifying the blood and eliminating toxins, helping your skin achieve that natural glow. Eating a beetroot a day or drinking beetroot juice became a daily routine for me in the month preceding the wedding to achieve that inner and outer glow.
2 weeks to go:
This is when I did my final session of my laser hair removal treatment. However, word of warning, your skin can get sensitive after laser, and retrospectively, one of my main lessons would be to do any facial treatments of this sort a little earlier, 3-4 weeks before the big day in order to allow any flare ups to have time to calm down.
On the Day:
For the big day itself, I decided to leave myself in the capable hands of my make up artist and let her pick the products and make up that were right for my skin. The main thing you can do is make sure you get enough sleep the night before so that your skin is feeling as refreshed and revived. One quick tip though, particularly for an asian wedding, where you may be wearing a lot of tight bangles - MotherEarth's Beauty Balm is a real life aver to apply on before putting on or removing your bangles, so they don't hurt as they come on or off!
And that's it from me - I hope some of process and lessons learnt are helpful for you when you are getting your skin ready for a big life event!
